How to Care for Quick-Dry Activewear Shorts (So They Actually Last)

Simple washing and drying habits that keep quick-dry polyester shorts looking and performing like new.
Quick-dry polyester is low-maintenance by design, but a few small habits make a real difference in how long your shorts hold their color, shape, and stretch.
Washing
Machine wash cold, inside out, with like colors. Cold water protects both the color and the fabric's stretch, and washing inside out reduces friction on any printed or embroidered designs. Skip the fabric softener — it can leave a coating on quick-dry synthetics that actually slows down how fast they dry.
Drying
Air drying is best. Quick-dry fabric earns its name here: hung up, most pairs are dry in under an hour. If you do use a dryer, use low heat. High heat is the single biggest cause of shrinkage and can degrade elastic waistbands and invisible zippers over time.
After the Beach or Pool
Rinse out chlorine or saltwater as soon as you reasonably can. Both are harder on synthetic fibers and dyes than fresh water, and leaving salt or chlorine to dry into the fabric will shorten its lifespan and can dull bright colorways faster.
Storage
Fold rather than hang on wire hangers, which can leave marks on the waistband over time. If you're packing for a trip, quick-dry fabric resists wrinkling well, so rolling instead of folding saves space without much downside.
Zippers and Drawstrings
Rinse sand out of invisible zippers after beach days — grit is the main thing that wears them out early. For drawstring styles, an occasional knot check keeps the cord from fraying at the tips.
None of this is complicated. Cold wash, air dry, rinse the sand out, and a pair of Chimú shorts will keep performing well past a single season.
